Berwick-upon-Tweed is a fortified border town at the mouth of the River Tweed, closer to Scotland than most of England. It has some of the finest Elizabethan town walls in Europe, three bridges across the river and a long, interesting history of changing hands between the two kingdoms.
It is on the East Coast Main Line, with trains to London, Edinburgh and Newcastle, and makes a good base for the Northumberland coast.
