Melrose is a pretty Borders town built around the ruins of a beautiful 12th-century abbey, said to hold the heart of Robert the Bruce. Above it rise the three peaks of the Eildon Hills, which make a classic walk, and the River Tweed flows through the valley.
It was the birthplace of rugby sevens in 1883, and is close to Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott, and the Borders Railway terminus at Tweedbank.
