What to expect
The Farne Islands, off the Northumberland coast, are home to tens of thousands of seabirds, including puffins that nest between roughly April and July. Boat trips run from Seahouses, and some tours land on islands such as Inner Farne. Arctic terns can be aggressive near their nests, so a hat is a good idea. Sailings depend on sea conditions.
Tips before you go
- Book ahead for May and June, the peak puffin season.
- Wear a hat on landing islands, as Arctic terns will dive at heads.
- Boats may be cancelled in rough seas, so keep your plans flexible.
