The Scottish Borders is a region of rolling hills, wooded river valleys and historic market towns, just north of the English border. It is famous for its four great ruined abbeys, at Melrose, Jedburgh, Dryburgh and Kelso, and for the writer Sir Walter Scott, who lived at Abbotsford.
It is quieter than most of Scotland and good value, and the Borders Railway runs from Edinburgh to Tweedbank, so you can visit without a car.
