Keswick is a proper Lakeland market town, with slate-roofed streets, outdoor shops, pubs and a lakeside on the doorstep. Derwentwater, one of the prettiest lakes in the district, is a few minutes' walk from the centre.
It is one of the best bases in the Lake District for walkers, with Cat Bells, Skiddaw and Borrowdale all close by, and it has enough going on for a wet day.
