What to expect
Blencathra is a large fell of 868 metres with a distinctive ridge, and Sharp Edge is a narrow rocky arete on its flank, one of the most exposed scrambles in the Lakes. It is a grade one scramble, but the exposure and the risk of a fall are serious, and accidents have occurred. Many walkers prefer to climb Blencathra by an easier route and avoid the arete.
Tips before you go
- Sharp Edge is a serious scramble and not suitable for beginners or anyone who dislikes heights.
- Do not attempt it in wet, icy or windy conditions.
- Safer routes up Blencathra avoid the arete entirely.
