What to expect
Haystacks is a small, craggy fell of about 597 metres that the writer Alfred Wainwright loved above all others, and where his ashes were scattered beside Innominate Tarn. Despite its modest height, it offers a rocky, varied ridge walk with big views over Buttermere, Ennerdale and the surrounding peaks. Routes start from Gatesgarth Farm near Buttermere or the Honister Pass.
Tips before you go
- There is some scrambling over rock, so it is not suitable for young children or anyone who dislikes heights.
- Do not walk it in low cloud or poor visibility, because the summit area is confusing.
- Carry waterproofs, as the weather can change quickly.
