What to expect
Catbells is a small fell of about 451 metres above Derwentwater, and one of the most popular walks in the Lake District. The ridge is short and the views over the lake and Borrowdale are huge, so it feels far bigger than it is. There is some easy scrambling near the top. It makes a good first fell for families with older children.
Tips before you go
- Parking is very limited, so arrive early or use the bus and boat from Keswick.
- The final scrambles can be slippery when wet.
- Combine it with a Derwentwater launch trip for an easy return.

Frequently asked questions
Can children do Catbells?
Many children manage it, but there are rocky scrambles and steep drops on parts of the ridge, so keep a close eye on younger ones.
