Windermere is the name of both England's largest natural lake and the small town above it, linked to the waterfront at Bowness. It has a railway station, which makes it one of the easiest places in the Lake District to reach without a car.
It is also a good base for a first visit, with boats, short walks, family attractions and plenty of places to eat, though it is the busiest corner of the park in summer.
