What to expect
You can hire a kayak or canoe at several points around Windermere, including Ambleside and Bowness, and paddle along the quiet northern shore, past wooded bays and small islands. Windermere has a 10 mph speed limit for motorboats, which makes it much calmer than it used to be. Guided trips are a good option for beginners and add safety.
Tips before you go
- Always wear a buoyancy aid, and check the weather before you set out.
- Keep close to the shore, because the lake is large and can get choppy.
- Avoid the busiest areas near the main boat jetties.
