What to expect
Orrest Head is a short climb of about 20 to 30 minutes from Windermere railway station to a viewpoint of 238 metres, looking over the lake and the fells beyond. It was the first Lakeland walk done by Alfred Wainwright, who said the views changed his life. It is a steady climb on good paths and an easy way to experience the Lake District without a long hike.
Tips before you go
- A good option for a short stop, or at the start or end of a day.
- The paths can be muddy, so wear sturdy shoes.
- Take a camera, as the views are best in clear weather.
