Coniston is a slate-built village at the head of Coniston Water, overlooked by the Old Man of Coniston, a fell of 803 metres. The lake is long and quiet, and the village feels more local and less crowded than Windermere.
It has strong links with John Ruskin and with Donald Campbell, who died here in 1967 attempting a water speed record, and is the start of several classic walks.
