A weekend in Whitby
A dramatic harbour town with a clifftop abbey
Whitby is a traditional fishing port on the North Yorkshire coast, with a ruined abbey on the cliff above the harbour, narrow old streets and a long beach nearby. It also has a famous literary link, as it inspired part of Bram Stoker's Dracula.
It is a great choice for a coastal weekend that mixes history, sea air, fish and chips and wild scenery.
How to get to Whitby
- From Manchester: About 3 hours by car. Train options are slow, so most visitors drive.
- From Liverpool: About 3.5 hours by car.
- From York: About 1.5 hours by car, or a coach or bus service from York and Leeds in season.
Journey times are rough guides. Check live train and road times before you travel.
