What to expect
The ruins of Whitby Abbey sit on the headland above the harbour, a Gothic skeleton against the sky. The site was an important Anglo-Saxon monastery and later a Benedictine abbey. The ruins inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula. A visitor centre and museum tell the story. The abbey is reached by the 199 steps, or by road.
Tips before you go
- The 199 steps are a Whitby tradition, but there is also road access.
- The headland is exposed, so wrap up in cold weather.
- Combine with a walk down to the harbour and the old town.
