Whitby is compact and dramatic, so this plan keeps day one in the town for the abbey, old streets and harbour, and uses day two for a coast walk or a steam train. Parking is limited, so arrive early or use a park and ride.
Wear sturdy shoes for the 199 steps and the cobbles, and book dinner in advance for Saturday evening.
Day 1: Abbey, old town and harbour
- Morning: Climb the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey on the East Cliff, and explore the ruins and visitor centre.
- Lunch: Eat fish and chips, a Whitby tradition, from one of the shops near the harbour. Queues are shorter outside peak times.
- Afternoon: Wander the old town, browse the jet jewellery shops and visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum.
- Evening: Walk along the harbour and have dinner in town, then a pub.
Day 2: Cliff path or steam train
- Morning: Walk the Cleveland Way along the cliffs to Robin Hood's Bay, about seven miles, with sea views and some steep sections.
- Lunch: Eat in Robin Hood's Bay village, a pretty smugglers' haunt tumbling to the sea.
- Afternoon: Return by bus along the coast, or take a train on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway if you prefer a calmer day.
- Heading home: Leave in the late afternoon, allowing for the winding roads out of town.
Where to stay
The old town on the East Side has the most atmosphere but poor parking. The West Cliff has sea views and larger hotels, and Sandsend and Robin Hood's Bay are quieter alternatives nearby.

Getting there and around
- From Manchester: About 3 hours by car. Train options are slow, so most visitors drive.
- From Liverpool: About 3.5 hours by car.
- From York: About 1.5 hours by car, or a coach or bus service from York and Leeds in season.
Whitby is walkable, but there is no mainline railway, so most visitors arrive by car. Use a car park or park and ride and walk into the old town. Buses run along the coast to Robin Hood's Bay and beyond.
If it rains
If it rains, spend more time in the museums and the abbey visitor centre, and ride the heritage railway for a cosy day out.
