What to expect
At 1,345 metres, Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the UK. The standard route, the Mountain Track, starts at the Glen Nevis visitor centre and climbs steadily for around ten miles there and back. It is a long, rocky walk rather than a technical climb, but the summit is often in cloud and the plateau has steep gullies close to the path, so navigation matters more than fitness.
Tips before you go
- Start early and set a turn-around time, because daylight and weather are the biggest risks.
- Carry a map, compass and the skill to use them, plus food, water, spare layers and a head torch.
- Snow can lie on the summit well into spring, and winter conditions need specialist kit and experience.
