The North York Moors are a landscape of purple heather, wooded valleys and old stone villages, with a coastline of cliffs and fishing harbours. This plan uses the steam railway on day one for an easy way into the moors, and spends day two on the western edge.
Heather is at its best in August and early September.
Day 1: Steam railway and the Hole of Horcum
- Morning: Take a steam train on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering to Goathland, famous as Aidensfield in Heartbeat and Hogsmeade station in Harry Potter.
- Lunch: Eat in Goathland, or a pub near the station.
- Afternoon: Walk the Hole of Horcum, a huge natural hollow, on the way back.
- Evening: Have dinner at a pub in Pickering or Helmsley.
Day 2: Helmsley and Rievaulx
- Morning: Explore Helmsley, with its castle and walled garden.
- Lunch: Eat in the market square.
- Afternoon: Walk or drive to Rievaulx Abbey, one of the finest abbey ruins in England.
- Heading home: Leave in the late afternoon, via the viewpoint at Sutton Bank if time allows.
