Durham is a small, hilly city built on a rocky loop of the River Wear, topped by a Norman cathedral and castle that are a World Heritage Site. This plan keeps day one for the cathedral and the old centre, and day two for the riverside and a day out.
The cathedral is one of the finest Norman buildings in Europe, so allow time.
Day 1: Cathedral and castle
- Morning: Visit Durham Cathedral and climb the tower for views over the city, allowing a couple of hours.
- Lunch: Eat in the Market Place or on the cobbled streets near the cathedral.
- Afternoon: Take a tour of Durham Castle, now part of the university, if available, or walk along the riverbanks.
- Evening: Have dinner in the old centre, then a pub.
Day 2: River and countryside
- Morning: Walk the riverside paths around the peninsula for the classic view of the cathedral.
- Lunch: Eat at a pub or cafe near the river.
- Afternoon: Visit Crook Hall and Gardens, a medieval manor house, or travel to Beamish, the living museum of the North, about 20 minutes away.
- Heading home: Durham station is a short walk or taxi ride from the centre, on the East Coast Main Line.
Where to stay
The old centre is atmospheric but small, and the area near the station is convenient. Several colleges offer rooms in the holidays.

Getting there and around
- From York: About 1 hour by train.
- From Newcastle: About 15 minutes by train.
- From London: About 3 hours by train from King's Cross.
The centre is walkable but steep, and best on foot. Driving in the centre is restricted, so use a park and ride.
If it rains
In wet weather, spend more time in the cathedral, the Oriental Museum and Durham's cafes, and take the Beamish museum, which has indoor areas.
