The Mourne Mountains are a compact range of rounded granite mountains in County Down, rising almost straight from the sea. They are the highest in Northern Ireland, with Slieve Donard at 850 metres, and are crossed by the Mourne Wall, a 22-mile stone wall built around the Silent Valley reservoir.
The writer C. S. Lewis said the Mournes inspired his Narnia stories, and the seaside town of Newcastle, forests and beaches make it a rounded weekend.
