Hawkshead is a pretty village of whitewashed cottages, narrow lanes and tiny squares, where cars are kept out of the centre. William Wordsworth went to school here, and Beatrix Potter's home, Hill Top, is just a couple of miles away.
It is surrounded by woodland and lakes, with Esthwaite Water, Tarn Hows and Grizedale Forest all close by.
