What to expect
Helvellyn rises to about 950 metres and is one of the best-known mountains in England. The classic route climbs Striding Edge, a narrow rocky ridge with exposed scrambling, then returns by an easier path. It is spectacular but serious. People with a fear of heights, children and anyone without scrambling experience should choose an alternative route.
Tips before you go
- Do not attempt Striding Edge in high winds, ice or poor visibility.
- A guided day is a good way to learn mountain skills.
- There are easier ways up Helvellyn that avoid the exposed ridge.

Frequently asked questions
Is Striding Edge dangerous?
It can be. The ridge is narrow and exposed, and accidents happen, particularly in wet, windy or icy conditions. Treat it as a scramble, not a walk.
