What to expect
Red kites were almost extinct in Britain, but a strong population survives in mid Wales, and a farm near Rhayader feeds them every afternoon, drawing hundreds of birds to swoop low over the fields. The spectacle is one of the best wildlife shows in Britain, and visitors watch from hides and a viewing area. It is also a good place for photography.
Tips before you go
- Arrive early to find a good position before the birds appear.
- Wrap up warmly, as the farm is exposed.
- Combine with a visit to the Elan Valley or the Brecon Beacons.
