What to expect
This is one of the best-loved easy walks in the Lakes, linking two lakes by woodland paths and the low ridge of Loughrigg Terrace. A popular route runs from Grasmere along the river to Rydal Water, past the famous Rydal Cave, and back along the terrace with views over both lakes. The path is mostly good, with a few rocky or muddy stretches, and the walk is about four miles.
Tips before you go
- Loughrigg Terrace is wide, easy and has big views, but can be busy at weekends.
- Parts of the route can be muddy after rain.
- The walk can be extended to Ambleside, with a bus back along the A591.
