What to expect
The South Downs Way is a 100-mile national trail between Winchester and Eastbourne, open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The route follows ridges with wide views and chalk tracks, and it can be ridden in sections over a weekend. It is a challenging ride with many hills, and sections can be muddy or rutted.
Tips before you go
- Choose a section, such as Alfriston to Eastbourne, for a manageable day.
- Check the surface after rain, as chalk becomes slippery.
- Carry spares and plan your water and food stops.
