The Yorkshire Dales are a landscape of limestone crags, green valleys, stone barns and waterfalls. This plan covers the south of the park on day one, with a classic circular walk at Malham, and the north on day two, with Hawes and the home of Wensleydale cheese.
A car makes it easier, as buses are infrequent.
Day 1: Malham
- Morning: Walk the Malham circular, taking in Janet's Foss, Gordale Scar and the huge limestone amphitheatre of Malham Cove, about seven miles.
- Lunch: Eat at a pub or cafe in Malham village.
- Afternoon: Finish the circuit via the Cove, or drive to Skipton or Grassington.
- Evening: Have dinner at a pub in Grassington or Skipton.
Day 2: Wensleydale and Hawes
- Morning: Drive to Hawes and visit the Wensleydale Creamery, where you can watch cheese being made and taste varieties.
- Lunch: Eat in Hawes, or a pub in a nearby village.
- Afternoon: Walk to Hardraw Force, a spectacular waterfall, and drive over the Buttertubs Pass if the weather allows.
- Heading home: Leave in the late afternoon, with time for a stop at Aysgarth Falls.
Where to stay
Skipton and Grassington are lively and central, Hawes is a good northern base, and quieter villages suit walkers.

Getting there and around
- From Leeds: About 1.5 hours by car.
- From Manchester: About 1.5 to 2 hours by car.
- From London: About 4 hours by train to Skipton or Settle with changes.
A car is by far the easiest way to see the Dales. Some buses link the main villages, but they are infrequent.
If it rains
If it rains, swap long walks for the Creamery, Skipton Castle and Hardraw Force, which is at its best after rain.
