York is small enough to see its highlights in two days, and almost everything is within a short walk. This plan puts the Minster and the old streets first, then leaves day two for museums, the river and some time to relax.
It is easy to swap days around, and there are lots of indoor options if the weather turns.
Day 1: The historic centre
- Morning: Start at York Minster, one of the largest medieval cathedrals in northern Europe. Allow one to two hours, and longer if you climb the tower.
- Late morning: Wander the Shambles and the nearby lanes, known as snickelways, and have a coffee.
- Afternoon: Walk a stretch of the city walls, such as Bootham Bar to Monk Bar, which gives views of the Minster and the rooftops.
- Evening: Have dinner in the old town, then join an evening ghost walk.
Day 2: Museums, river and tea
- Morning: Visit the Jorvik Viking Centre if you want the Viking story, or the National Railway Museum if you are a railway fan or have children.
- Lunch: Eat near the river or in the city centre.
- Afternoon: See Clifford's Tower, stroll beside the River Ouse and finish with afternoon tea.
- Heading home: York station is a short walk from the centre, which makes leaving easy.
Where to stay
Staying inside or close to the city walls makes everything walkable. The area around the station is convenient for trains, and the Bishopthorpe Road area is calmer, with independent cafes.

Getting there and around
- From Manchester: About 1.5 to 1.75 hours by direct train, or about 2 hours by car.
- From Liverpool: About 2 to 2.5 hours by train, usually with one change.
- From London: About 2 hours by train from King's Cross.
York is best explored on foot. If you drive, use a park and ride rather than looking for parking in the centre, and book restaurants ahead for Saturday evening.
If it rains
On a wet day, add the Yorkshire Museum, Jorvik, the National Railway Museum and the Minster, and stop for tea in one of the city's tea rooms.

Booking timed tickets for popular attractions and dinner on Saturday evening is wise, especially in summer and in December.
Can I add a day trip?
Yes. Castle Howard, Fountains Abbey and Whitby can all be reached in a day, but you will need a car or an early start.
