What to expect
York's medieval walls are among the best-preserved in England. You can walk along much of the roughly two-mile circuit, entering and leaving at the gates, which the city calls bars. The walk gives views of the Minster and the old streets. The circuit is not continuous, because the rivers cut through, so you step back to street level at a few points.
Tips before you go
- The walls are open to walkers but may close in bad weather.
- Steps can be steep and uneven.
- Start at Micklegate Bar for good views of the Minster.
