The Peak District is Britain's first national park, and sits between Manchester, Sheffield and Derby. This plan splits it into the Dark Peak around Castleton on day one, and the softer White Peak around Bakewell on day two.
Both days work by car, and the Hope Valley railway makes day one possible by train.
Day 1: Castleton and Mam Tor
- Morning: Climb Mam Tor and walk the Great Ridge towards Hollins Cross and Lose Hill, a classic walk of a few hours.
- Lunch: Eat at a pub in Castleton, a pretty stone village below the hill.
- Afternoon: Visit one of the show caverns, such as Peak Cavern or Speedwell, or climb to Peveril Castle.
- Evening: Have dinner at a pub in the Hope Valley.
Day 2: Bakewell and the White Peak
- Morning: Visit Bakewell and try a traditional Bakewell pudding, then walk along the Monsal Trail.
- Lunch: Eat in Bakewell or a pub near the trail.
- Afternoon: Visit Chatsworth House and its gardens, booking a timed ticket in advance, or walk in Dovedale instead.
- Heading home: Leave in the late afternoon to avoid weekend traffic on the Snake Pass.
Where to stay
Castleton and Hathersage are best for walkers, and Bakewell suits food lovers. Buxton is an elegant spa-town alternative.

Getting there and around
- From Manchester: About 1 hour by car, or 40 minutes by train to Edale.
- From Sheffield: About 30 to 40 minutes by car.
- From London: About 3 hours by car.
A car is the easiest way to link the villages. The Hope Valley line serves Edale, and local buses connect some villages, but they are infrequent.
If it rains
If it rains, swap Mam Tor for the Castleton caves, spend longer at Chatsworth and enjoy a long lunch in Bakewell.

Can I do the Peak District by train?

Is Mam Tor hard?
The ridge is moderate, with a couple of steady climbs and clear paths.
