Skye is one of the great landscapes of Britain, but its roads are narrow and distances are long, so two days is a tight fit. This plan picks the best-known sights and groups them by area, with the north on day one and the west on day two.
Book accommodation far ahead, and expect busy car parks in summer.
Day 1: Trotternish
- Morning: Walk to the Old Man of Storr, a rock pinnacle, starting early to beat the crowds.
- Lunch: Eat in Portree, the island's colourful capital.
- Afternoon: Drive to the Quiraing for a walk through the landslip, or stop at Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls.
- Evening: Have dinner in Portree and look at the harbour.
Day 2: Glen Brittle and Dunvegan
- Morning: Walk to the Fairy Pools in Glen Brittle, with the Cuillin mountains behind.
- Lunch: Eat in Carbost, near the Talisker distillery.
- Afternoon: Visit the Talisker distillery for a tour, or Dunvegan Castle, home of the MacLeod clan.
- Heading home: Cross the bridge to the mainland, and allow time for the long drive.
Where to stay
Portree is the main base, with the most choice. Broadford and Sligachan suit walkers, and Carbost is quiet and close to the distillery.

Getting there and around
- From Glasgow: About 5 hours by car, or by train to Mallaig and then a ferry.
- From Edinburgh: About 6 hours by car.
- From Inverness: About 2 hours by car.
A car is essential, and roads have passing places, so drive carefully. Buses are limited.
If it rains
If it rains, visit the distillery, Dunvegan Castle and the museums, and do shorter walks when the weather clears.
