Chester is compact and easy, and a short train ride from Liverpool and Manchester, so this plan makes the most of it with an unhurried first day in the city centre and a more active second day at the zoo or on the river.
Almost everything on day one is within a few minutes' walk of the Cross, the old central crossroads.
Day 1: Walls, Rows and cathedral
- Morning: Walk the city walls, a circuit of about two miles, starting at the Eastgate Clock and taking in views over the racecourse and the River Dee.
- Lunch: Eat in The Rows, the unusual medieval two-level shopping galleries, where you can find cafes and restaurants above the street.
- Afternoon: Visit Chester Cathedral and its cloisters and gardens, and see the Roman Amphitheatre just outside the walls.
- Evening: Take a riverside stroll through The Groves and have dinner in the city centre.
Day 2: The zoo or the river
- Morning: Go to Chester Zoo, a few miles from the centre, and allow most of the day. It has indoor areas for wet weather.
- Lunch: Eat in the zoo or return to the city for lunch.
- Afternoon: If you skip the zoo, take a short cruise on the River Dee from The Groves, then explore Grosvenor Park.
- Heading home: Chester station is a short walk or taxi ride from the walls.
Where to stay
Staying inside the walls puts you next to everything. Near the station is convenient for trains, and the riverside is quieter, with views of the Dee.

Getting there and around
- From Manchester: About 1 to 1.25 hours by train, or about 1 hour by car.
- From Liverpool: About 45 minutes by train, or about 45 minutes by car.
- From London: About 2 to 2.5 hours by direct train from Euston.
The city centre is small and walkable. Chester Zoo is a short bus or taxi ride from the centre. If you drive, use a park and ride or one of the car parks outside the walls, because central parking is limited.
If it rains
On a wet day, spend longer in the cathedral, The Rows, the Grosvenor Museum and the indoor areas of the zoo.
