The Cairngorms National Park is the largest in Britain, with high plateaus, ancient pine forest and wild glens. This plan uses Aviemore as a base, with a mountain day on day one, and wildlife and a steam railway on day two.
The weather in the mountains can be severe, so check forecasts.
Day 1: Mountain and loch
- Morning: Ride the Cairngorm Mountain funicular railway to the Ptarmigan top station for views, with a walk or a cafe stop.
- Lunch: Eat at the mountain cafe or in Aviemore.
- Afternoon: Visit Loch Morlich, with its sandy beach and watersports, or the Highland Wildlife Park.
- Evening: Have dinner in Aviemore.
Day 2: Ospreys and steam
- Morning: Visit the RSPB reserve at Loch Garten to watch ospreys in season, from April to August.
- Lunch: Eat at Boat of Garten or Carrbridge.
- Afternoon: Take a ride on the Strathspey Steam Railway between Aviemore and Broomhill.
- Heading home: Leave in the late afternoon, and allow time for the long drive south.
Where to stay
Aviemore is the main hub, with the most choice. Boat of Garten and Carrbridge are quieter, and Glenmore is close to the mountain and the loch.

Getting there and around
- From Edinburgh: About 2.5 hours by car, or 3 hours by train to Aviemore.
- From Glasgow: About 3 hours by car.
- From Inverness: About 40 minutes by car.
A car is best. Trains and buses serve Aviemore, and local buses link some villages.
If it rains
If it rains, visit the Highland Wildlife Park, the reindeer centre and a cosy pub, and ride the steam train.
