The Brecon Beacons, now called Bannau Brycheiniog, are a national park of high red-sandstone hills, waterfalls and quiet valleys in south Wales. This plan puts Pen y Fan, the highest peak in southern Britain, on day one, and a waterfall walk and a book-browsing town on day two.
The weather on the tops can be harsh, so check forecasts and take proper kit.
Day 1: Pen y Fan
- Morning: Climb Pen y Fan by a popular route from the Storey Arms or Pont ar Daf, a walk of about six to eight miles.
- Lunch: Eat a packed lunch on the summit if the weather allows, or at a pub on the way back.
- Afternoon: Descend and drive to Brecon, a small market town with a cathedral.
- Evening: Have dinner at a pub in Brecon.
Day 2: Waterfalls and Hay-on-Wye
- Morning: Walk the Four Waterfalls route near Ystradfellte, where you can go behind Sgwd yr Eira, about five miles.
- Lunch: Eat at a pub or cafe in Ystradfellte or Pontneddfechan.
- Afternoon: Drive to Hay-on-Wye to browse the bookshops.
- Heading home: Leave in the late afternoon, with time for the drive across the hills.
Where to stay
Brecon is the main town and a good base. Crickhowell and Hay-on-Wye are lovely alternatives, and Ystradfellte suits the waterfalls.

Getting there and around
- From Cardiff: About 1 hour by car.
- From Bristol: About 1.5 hours by car.
- From Birmingham: About 2.5 hours by car.
A car is essential. Trains stop at Abergavenny, and a limited bus service runs to some villages.
If it rains
If it rains, skip the summit, and visit the caves at Dan-yr-Ogof, the waterfalls, which are at their best in rain, and Hay's bookshops.
