The Outer Hebrides, also called the Western Isles, are a long chain of islands off the north-west coast of Scotland, including Lewis, Harris, the Uists and Barra. They are famous for wide, white-sand beaches, turquoise water, ancient standing stones and a strong Gaelic-speaking culture.
It is a long way from most of England, so it suits a longer trip. Island life is slow, and many places close on Sundays, especially on Lewis and Harris.
