Fowey, pronounced Foy, is a lovely working harbour on the south Cornish coast, with steep streets of cottages above the estuary and boats of all sizes in the river. It was the home of the novelist Daphne du Maurier, who set several books here, and it hosts a literary festival each May.
Ferries run across the river to the village of Polruan, and walks lead along the cliffs and creeks, while the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are within a short drive.
