Dungeness is a remote, windswept shingle headland on the Kent coast, one of the largest expanses of shingle in Europe. It looks like nowhere else in England, with old fishing huts, weathered boats, two lighthouses and a looming nuclear power station on the skyline.
It has a National Nature Reserve, a miniature railway and the garden of the late film-maker Derek Jarman, planted among the stones, and it is a favourite place for photographers and walkers.
