What to expect
York's Christmas market spreads through the historic centre, with timber chalets selling crafts, gifts, food and mulled wine along streets such as Parliament Street, around St Helen's Square and in the shadow of the Minster. The Shambles and the other medieval lanes are especially atmospheric when lit up. It is very popular, so crowds are heavy at weekends.
Tips before you go
- Visit midweek or in the early evening to avoid the worst crowds.
- Book accommodation and trains well ahead.
- Wrap up warmly, as December in York is cold.
