What to expect
The New Forest is one of the few places in England where ponies, cattle, pigs and deer roam freely on open heath and ancient woodland, under a system of rights known as commoning. Walking and cycling routes start from villages such as Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst. Never feed or approach the ponies, and drive slowly because animals can step onto the road.
Tips before you go
- Do not feed or touch the ponies. It is harmful and illegal to feed them.
- Drive slowly and watch for animals on the road.
- Cycle hire is available in Brockenhurst.
