What to expect
Mam Tor, nicknamed the Shivering Mountain because of its crumbling shale slopes, is the start of the Great Ridge, a high, airy path that links Mam Tor, Hollins Cross, Back Tor and Lose Hill. The classic route is a circular walk from Castleton or Edale, with sweeping views over the Hope and Edale valleys. The ridge itself is only a couple of miles, but you can extend it into a longer day.
Tips before you go
- The ridge is exposed to the wind and weather, so carry waterproofs.
- Paths are well-worn but can be slippery in wet conditions.
- Combine with a visit to the Blue John Cavern or Peveril Castle in Castleton.
