What to expect
The waters off the west coast of Scotland are some of the best in Europe for spotting whales and dolphins, including minke whales, bottlenose and common dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks. Trips run from Tobermory, Oban and other harbours, and many are supported by research trusts that record sightings. The sea is large and sightings are never guaranteed, but chances are good in summer.
Tips before you go
- Book well ahead, as boats are small.
- Take seasickness tablets if you need them, and dress warmly.
