What to expect
Harlech Castle stands on a steep rock above the Atlantic, built by Edward I in the 1280s and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its great gatehouse, thick walls and massive towers give a strong sense of medieval power, and the views from the walls take in the sea, Tremadog Bay and the mountains of Snowdonia. It was the last Welsh castle to fall in the Wars of the Roses.
Tips before you go
- The climb to the castle is steep, so wear comfortable shoes.
- Visit on a clear day for the best views.
