What to expect
Arthur's Seat is an extinct volcano of 251 metres in the middle of Holyrood Park, dominating the Edinburgh skyline. A short, steep path from the Royal Mile area climbs to the summit in about 45 minutes to an hour, with wide views over the city, the Forth and the Pentland Hills. It is a wild, open piece of countryside, only a short walk from the city centre.
Tips before you go
- The final scramble is steep and rocky, and it can be windy.
- Wear proper shoes, as paths can be slippery.
- Go early or late for the best light and the fewest people.
