Manchester is a big, creative city with a compact centre, and this plan weaves together its independent neighbourhoods, free museums and waterways. Day one covers the Northern Quarter and the industrial story, and day two moves out to Salford Quays and the canals.
The city has an excellent food scene, so leave time for lunch and dinner.
Day 1: Northern Quarter and industrial Manchester
- Morning: Wander the Northern Quarter, with its independent shops, vinyl stores and street art, then visit the stunning John Rylands Library.
- Lunch: Eat in the Northern Quarter, where cafes and street food stalls are plentiful.
- Afternoon: Visit the free Science and Industry Museum, on the site of the world's oldest passenger railway station.
- Evening: Have dinner in the city centre or Chinatown, then go to a gig or bar.
Day 2: Canals and Salford Quays
- Morning: Walk the canals of Castlefield, once an industrial hub and now a popular waterside area with Roman remains.
- Lunch: Eat in Castlefield or in the city centre.
- Afternoon: Take the tram to Salford Quays to see the Lowry arts centre and the Imperial War Museum North, both free to enter.
- Heading home: Piccadilly and Victoria stations both have fast trains across the north and to London.

Getting there and around
- From Liverpool: About 50 minutes by train.
- From London: About 2 hours 10 minutes by train from Euston.
- From Leeds: About 55 minutes by train.
The city centre is walkable, and the Metrolink tram connects Salford Quays, the airport and the suburbs. A car is not needed, and parking is expensive.
If it rains
If it rains, add the Manchester Art Gallery, the People's History Museum and long lunches in the Northern Quarter's cafes.
