Canterbury is a historic cathedral city with a compact, pedestrian centre, so it is easy to explore in a weekend. This plan spends day one in the old city, and uses day two to add the river and a seaside trip.
The cathedral is a World Heritage Site and takes a good couple of hours.
Day 1: Cathedral and old streets
- Morning: Visit Canterbury Cathedral, the mother church of the Anglican Communion, and allow a couple of hours.
- Lunch: Eat in one of the cafes and restaurants on the pedestrian streets.
- Afternoon: Wander the medieval streets, see the Weavers' Houses and visit St Augustine's Abbey.
- Evening: Have dinner in the city, then a drink in a historic pub.
Day 2: River, walls and the coast
- Morning: Take a punt or river tour on the Stour, or walk along the old city walls.
- Lunch: Eat at a riverside cafe or in the Westgate Gardens.
- Afternoon: Take a short trip to Whitstable for oysters and the harbour, about 15 minutes away.
- Heading home: Canterbury has two stations, with fast trains to London St Pancras.
Where to stay
The centre is walkable and atmospheric, with many guesthouses within the walls. The area near Canterbury East station is handy for the fast train.

Getting there and around
- From London: About 1 hour by high-speed train from St Pancras.
- From Brighton: About 3 hours by train or car.
- From Whitstable: About 15 minutes by train.
The city is compact, and best explored on foot. Use a park and ride, because parking in the centre is limited.
If it rains
In wet weather, spend more time in the cathedral, the museums and the tearooms, and visit the Beaney House of Art and Knowledge.
