What to expect
Fountains Abbey is the largest monastic ruin in England, a 12th-century Cistercian abbey set in the Studley Royal water garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tall ruined arches, a mill and a landscaped garden with lakes and follies are all connected by gentle paths. The estate also includes a deer park, a Victorian church and a tea room.
Tips before you go
- Allow most of a half day, as the site is large.
- Take comfortable shoes, as paths are long and uneven in places.
- Visit in autumn for colour, or on a summer evening for the light.
