What to expect
The basking shark is the second-largest fish in the world, and in summer these harmless giants gather off the coast of Cornwall to feed on plankton. Boat trips from Penzance, Falmouth and other harbours go in search of them, and visitors may see huge fins slicing the surface. Responsible operators follow strict guidance, and some trips are supported by conservation groups.
Tips before you go
- Choose an accredited operator that follows the wildlife code of conduct.
- Book ahead, because trips depend on weather and sea conditions.
- Take seasickness tablets if you are prone to it.
