Liverpool is a big city with a compact centre, and almost everything in this plan is within a short walk. It leans on the waterfront and music on day one, then history, architecture and a ferry across the Mersey on day two.
Many of the top museums are free, which makes it one of the best-value city breaks in the country.
Day 1: Waterfront and the Beatles
- Morning: Start at the Royal Albert Dock, with its museums, galleries and cafes, and visit the Beatles Story.
- Lunch: Eat at the dock or in the nearby Baltic Triangle.
- Afternoon: Walk along the Pier Head past the Three Graces, and visit the Museum of Liverpool, which is free.
- Evening: Go to Mathew Street, home of the Cavern Club, for live music and dinner.
Day 2: Cathedrals, Georgian Liverpool and the ferry
- Morning: Visit Liverpool Cathedral, the largest cathedral in Britain, and climb the tower for views of the city.
- Lunch: Eat in the Georgian Quarter around Hope Street, a stylish area of cafes and restaurants.
- Afternoon: Take a Mersey ferry across the river for views of the waterfront, or walk in Sefton Park.
- Heading home: Lime Street station is in the centre, with trains to Manchester, London and beyond.
Where to stay
The waterfront and Albert Dock area are central and scenic. Ropewalks and the Baltic Triangle are lively and creative, and the Georgian Quarter is quieter and elegant.

Getting there and around
- From Manchester: About 50 minutes by train.
- From Chester: About 45 minutes by train.
- From London: About 2 hours 15 minutes by train from Euston.
The centre is walkable, and trains and buses link neighbourhoods and the suburbs. The Merseyrail network runs to Formby, Chester and the Wirral, which makes day trips easy.
If it rains
If it rains, spend longer in the museums and galleries, many of which are free, and in the cathedrals and bars.
